Sí, es una cadena pero nos gusta mucho la localización de Fuencarral porque pilla justo en el corazón de la zona comercial más cañera de Madrid. Hay tapas y platos para todos los gustos pero si no eres de cerdo y no tomas harina la oferta se reduce bastante. Puedes consultar la carta online. Tómate una copa dentro o un café en su resguardada terraza.

Part of a local chain, this stylish eatery has the perfect location, bang in the centre of Madrid's busiest shopping neighbourhood. Tapas, meat, fish, salads, it has a wide range of offers on the menu but if you don't eat pork or flour, the choice is considerably smaller. Check out their online menu. Great for an early drink or a coffee out on the terrace.

A good place for a quick lunch or tapa, this eatery has been in the neighbourhood for ages and offers a good range of meat, fish, salads and tapas at reasonable prices. It's also good for a quick or slow coffee or a drink.

El Rastro de Madrid

Este mercado al aire libre data de 1740 y es sin duda uno de los lugares y momentos más típicos madrileños. En la actualidad es una mezcla de venta de objetos de segunda o tercera mano, puestos de ropas, accesorios y elementos de ferretería, tiendas de muebles vintage, muebles nuevos, tiendas de montañas, fotografía, venta de bocadillos y toda suerte de combinaciones extrañas. Mad Malasaña ha visto en su última visita un puesto que incluía un ciervo a tamaño real en bronce. Empezando a las 9 de la mañana y casi vacío sobre las tres de la tarde la gente se hace camino hacia los distintos bares y restaurantes de la zona para el aperitivo o la comida de domingo.

Every Sunday without fail, one of the oldest flea markets in the world, offers a sprawling combination of shops, stalls and people selling junk on the floor, covering a series of streets centered around Ribera de Curtidores. A must for all visitors and most locals, it starts at 9 AM getting really busy in the final build up to 3PM, although most are gone by 2:30PM. You can find anything from junk, vintage clothes and furniture, small electrical appliances, card trading, ethnic clothes, second hand dvds and video tapes, accessories, suitcase, mountain gear shops, hardware, photography shops, shops selling local style baguettes and beer, old books, fake designer bags, track suits.... If you want to be a true local end the day sipping an aperitif or munching a tapa at one of the many bars and restaurants on the way back from the Rastro towards Plaza Mayor.

En honor del periodista, poeta y diputado republicano murciano, Juan Pujol, fundador del Diario Madrid, no confundir con el agente doble Garbo. Esta pequeña plaza corta en dos la calle Espíritu Santo, hacia Fuencarral una calle bulliciosa de bares y sitios para comer, y hacia San Bernardo una zona más tranquila, más barrio. Parte del recorrido imprescindible del barrio, perfectamente situada entre la Plaza del Dos de Mayo, la Corredera Alta de San Pablo, Plaza de San Ildefonso y Fuencarral.

Deep inside the heart of Malasaña, this square is on the perfect route from Fuencarral street and Plaza Dos de Mayo, via Calle Colón, Plaza de San Ildefonso, Corredera Alta de San Pablo and Calle Espíritu Santo. The square actually cuts the latter street in two, the first part being the most lively, full of shops and restaurants (Japanese, burgers, vegan and vegetarian, Italian, bakeries, French crêpes... which you can find in this same guide).

Taberna tradicional con solera para tapear y "caldear". Un poco fuera del barrio pero a pocos pasos de la Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos. 

Traditional Spanish taverna for food, tapas and wines, it's a bit out of the way but worth the while if you're in the area.

La Camarilla

¿De paseo cerca de la Plaza Mayor? ¿De vuelta del Rastro un domingo? Mad Malasaña recomienda este restaurante para tapear, comer sentado, tapear en mesa o tomarse un mojito. Todo en uno. También hacen Brunch por las mañanas y Drunch por las tardes. Mad Malasaña tomó pimientos del piquillo rellenos, ensalada de naranja y espinacas, pisto manchego sin huevo y brocheta de langostinos y verduras en tempura con salsa agridulce. Todo muy bueno.

Touring the Plaza Mayor neighbourhood? Back from the Sunday Rastro? We recommend this place for a snack or a full blown meal, for tapas or main courses, even for drinks in the evening. The place covers all day including brunch and drunch (early evening meal). Mad Malasaña had stuffed red peppers, orange and spinach salad, Spanish style ratatouille and prawn tempura in sweet and sour sauce.

PLAZAS DEL BARRIO

Histórica plaza madrileña que conmemora que aquí se levantaron contra los franceses los vecinos de la villa, el 2 de mayo de 1808, Manuela Malasaña entre ellos. Capital de la movida madrileña en los ochenta, ha sido también notoria por su botellón nocturno los fines de semana. 

Con terracitas durante el día y mercadillo vintage los sábados por la mañana, es el corazón del barrio y de aquí parten muchas de las calles más interesantes de la zona. Mad Malasaña lo incluye en su recorrido vital hacia Fuencarral: Manuela Malasaña, Calle de Ruiz, Plaza del Dos de Mayo, San Andrés, Espíritu Santo, Corredera Alta de San Pablo, Calle Colón, Fuencarral y Gran Vía.

This square marks one of the places where the people of Madrid stood up to Napoleon's invasion on 2 May 1808 (a local holiday since 1985). One of those local heroes was Manuela Malasaña, half French herself, who was executed by the French for her part in the uprising. There's a street in her name just up from the square. Very famous in the 1980s for harbouring the famous Movida, a countercultural movement that erupted shortly after the death of Franco producing great number of new wave, technopop and even fake new romantic bands and other renowned figures like Pedro Almodovar. The square is always lively with outdoor eating and drinking all year round, a small vintage flea market on Saturday mornings and plenty of nocturnal activities. Dos de Mayo is at the heart of Malasaña and its the best place to use as a starting point to scour adjoining streets for tiny shops and places to eat and drink (many of which are featured here).

Ensalada a compartir, dos platos, un café y un postre (suficiente para dos): 42 euros.

Great location and great atmosphere. Eat or drink or buy some furniture or do all three. Good, contemporary and classic food, but busy, so book. They open every day and close after 2AM at the weekends. Kitchen open all day. During the week they have a lunchtime menu at 10.90€. A starter, two mains, one coffee and one dessert (for two): 42 €.

Plaza de San Ildefonso - Plazas del barrio

PLAZAS DEL BARRIO

Emplazada entre Malasaña y Ballesta, esta plaza es de obligado paso para muchísimos recorridos del barrio y toma el nombre de la iglesia que cierra dos de sus lados. En este lugar se situó, hasta 1970 el primer mercado cubierto de la capital, levantado en 1834. Hoy, es paso obligado desde Malasaña a la calle Fuencarral (por Barco o Colón) o para iniciar el recorrido por Triball (por Barco y Corredera Baja de San Pablo). Muy animada por el día como nudo de calles de barrio y por las tardes-noches, con buen tiempo, por su terraza.

Another square you must pass to visit many of the busy streets of Malasaña, it's very well connected and less than a minute away from Fuencarral and a few minutes more to Chueca and Gran Vía. If you're interested in Triball, start your route here or just head northwest towards Plaza Dos de Mayo, via Corredera Alta de San Pablo, Espíritu Santo and San Andrés. Micro tienda de exquisitos bombones de autor muy cerquita de la Plaza de San Ildefonso, también organizan talleres para trabajar el chocolate y aprender a hacer bombones en casa. Están en Facebook como "La bombonera de barco".

Tiny shop of exquisitely crafted chocolates of all sorts of ingredients and origins. They also arrange chocolate workshops so that you can learn how to make your own at home. You can find them on Facebook as "la bombonera de barco" but sadly not in English.

Bodega Ángel Sierra

De toda la vida, bien panelado en madera y mugre de más de cien años, es uno de los sitios más recomendados para tomar un vermú y una tapita. Tiene dos ambientes, frente a la plaza de Chueca de pie, alicatado, entrando por el lateral de San Gregorio, toneles, madera, mesas, más oscuro y a veces, todo hay que decirlo, gente un poco particular, de esos que abren y cierran los bares y hablan con cualquier extraño... La calidad del aire ha mejorado mucho desde que no se puede fumar.

 

Highly recommended for a mid-day vermouth and a bite to eat, it has two areas, pretty much like a British pub of old. To the front of the building is the standing bar counter area and if you enter by the side street, there's a more secluded dark area with tables. Allegedly serving vermouth since 1900 it clearly has character and plenty of characters in it. Facing Chueca square it's very lively through-out the week.

Otro comedero tokiota que combina carta y cinta transportadora, los platos "móviles" se cobran a 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4.5, 5 y 5.5 euros. El agua, tanto con o sin gas, es gratis y tienes tu propio grifo en la mesa. Nueve platos y tres bebidas: 37 euros.

Tokyo-style fast food sushi joint, all on a moving conveyor belt. Water, both still or sparkling, free from your own table tap. Moving plates are charged at 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4.5, 5 and 5.5 €. Nine plates and three drinks: 37 €.

Cáscaras

Este restaurante de día, aunque por el nombre parezca centrado en el huevo, el revuelto y la tortilla, en realidad tiene de todo, incluidos platos vegetarianos. Hay menú entre semana, pero está muy concurrido por los trabajadores de las oficinas de la zona de Plaza España así que es mejor ir pronto. Comida para dos, 35 euros.

Initially mostly egg and tortillas, they actually have a very comprehensive menu, including vegetarian dishes. They do a weekly lunchtime special menu but there are a lot of offices in the area so turn up early. One course meal for two, 35€.

Tapasentao

Sí, nos salimos un poco de nuestra zona pero si estás por los Austrias o has ido al Rastro, este es un buen sitio para tapear. Más tranquilo entre semana, las tapas son variadas y hay menu a 10 euros. Los fines de semana está más animado y  no es muy grande.

A place to stop for a tapa for lunch or evening meal if you're exploring the area around the Plaza Mayor or if you've been to the Rastro on Sunday. Not ideal for vegetarians.

Emma + Cocina

Comer, cenar, tapear. Si está muy lleno el Mercado de San Miguel, prueba aquí. Está frente a una de las salidas, casi esquina con la calle de Cuchilleros. Abren a la 1:15 para comer y a las 8:15 para cenar. Cerrado los martes. Bebidas y tapeo para cinco personas, 65 euros.
